The Learning team at Sydney Living Museums recently had the privilege of working with Morwenna, who provided consulting services for the design of a new accessible learning program. Her expertise in access and inclusion has been instrumental in the design of our program and working with her was wonderful growth experience for the team. Morwenna shared her knowledge and experience in arts and disability policy and practice with great generosity and insight.

Morwenna was selected by Polyglot Theatre to guide us through the recruitment process to appoint Board Directors who reflect the diversity of the community in which we live...I was looking for a guide to stretch my thinking and to provide me with information on “how to do this the right way” without getting tied up in knots. Morwenna provided clear advice in steady stages that were easy for me to follow; she provided insight and foresight.

Previous work

One of the things I love about consulting is the variety and range of different projects I am asked to lead across all areas of the arts and culture sectors. Below are some examples of recent projects I’ve worked with.

Perth Festival

2019

What: Development of first Disability Action Plan (available here), including review of all current systems/processes/programs and qualitative and quantitative consultation methods to seek feedback and ideas for the future from the disability community.

Outcomes: Within the first year of this plan, Perth Festival established an external accessibility committee (consisting of community members, both disabled and allies) and a significant increase in the number of access bookings for the 2020 Festival.

“Morwenna has been instrumental in guiding and advising Perth Festival as we have developed our first Disability, Access & Inclusion Plan over a four year period. Her knowledge of policy and legislation is second to none and her unique capacity to translate this knowledge into language and action that is both accessible and ambitious is inspiring to the teams and individuals she works with.

Morwenna is highly sought after as one of Australia's leaders in advocacy for access and inclusion. She is a brilliant facilitator and her approach to her work as a consultant in this field is always passionately & carefully tailored to whom she is working with. I cannot recommend her more highly.”

– Anna Reece, Executive Producer, Perth Festival

Queensland Opera

2020

What: Development of Strategic Plan and Disability Action Plan

Outcomes: Application submitted to the National Performing Arts Partnership Framework funding, implementation of the organisation’s first Disability Action Plan.

“I have had the good fortune to work with Morwenna as a colleague in industry programs and as a consultant on the development of Opera Queensland’s strategic and disability action plans. In every instance, Morwenna brings clear insight and rigorous intelligence built upon years of experience in the arts and disability sectors. This is enhanced by a wonderful sense of humour that can see a way through even the most complex scenarios. I cannot recommend her highly enough.”

– Partrick Nolan, CEO and Artistic Director, Opera Queensland

Accessible Arts

2019 onwards

What: Various consultation projects (relating to conference design and programming, governance diversity) and training design and delivery (Accessible Online Events and Disability Confidence Training)

Outcomes: Successful delivery of 2019 Arts Activated Conference, partnership with Women on Boards to deliver a workshop program called ‘Get On Board’, development and delivery of new and tailored training programs for a diverse range of arts organisations.

"I have been working with Morwenna for the past two years. She provided invaluable input in the development of the Accessible Arts - Arts Activated 2019 Conference, and in 2020 has researched and developed an arts and cultural training program for Online Accessibility. Her passion and commitment to artists with disability and her familiarity around policy and the history of the arts and disability sector is exceptional. She is a joy to work with, a great trainer, a wonderful collaborator and mentor and I know our entire team view her as part of our family. We continue to work with Morwenna whenever we can, as consultant, trainer and Accessibility expert."

- Kerry Comerford, CEO, Accessible Arts

Unlimited commissions programme (UK based Organisation supporting d/Deaf and disabled artists

2015 - 2016

What: Impact evaluation reports, to explore the evidence about whether they were making a difference and achieving their vision to shift perceptions about disabled artists across the UK and internationally. This involved fieldwork in Scotland, London and Northern Ireland, conducting interviews and a major survey.

Outcomes: Our findings provided an evidence base for the programme, and helped identify important new opportunities. The programme partners were subsequently able to secure £3 million in new funding for a new phase of work. This project is featured as a short case study on the Patternmakers website and is available here.
